Invention of PIOA - Part 3: Latin versus Devanagari

Image
Hello Friends, There was a big issue going on during those days. People everywhere were using Latin letters in chat, messages, advertisements, reminders, notebooks, emails, posters everywhere to write Indian languages... Wait, what am I talking about? Am I still in a dream? Oh god! I am still dreaming like a Devanagarist, why god, why? Yes, dreaming like a Devanagarist, speaking like a Devanagarist, thinking like a Devanagarist... these are the few things that give an experience of being a Devanagarist. Devanagari Alphabets are Arranged based on Phonetic Characteristics Devanagari script is indeed a phonetic script for the Sanskrit language. The arrangement of letters in Devanagari is purely based on the phonetic character of the sounds represented by the letters. Labials are arranged in one group, dentals, retroflexes, alveolars, and guttural, each of them are arranged separately. But there is a problem with the alphabet. This alphabet is less relevant in the case of Modern Indian Lan...

The story of PIOA Part 1

PIOA: The Pan Indian Orthographic Alphabet Those were the early days of 2017, and an idea was under consideration to be converted into reality. I had to deal with the script problems then. So for many days, I had to search for a different option, something ou t of the box, something very contemporary and modernistic, and something perfect for the languages spoken in my subcontinent. Something was actually happening from the previous year. Turkish serials were introduced in India for the first time. Indeed Turkish serials were appreciated all over the world, including the subcontinent (I am not a fan of serials though), I observed something unexpected. In the Eastern world where religion and culture both matter the most, there is one country which looks very progressive, very mature, and very sophisticated as well. It simply doesn't seem to be any normal Asian backward country. Simply we can't judge it by its past. The Ottoman past is present in physical form, but it is heavil...

Invention of PIOA -Part 2: My thoughts on Devanagari changes-My neutral and unbiased thoughts on Hindi-Urdu Debate

Friends! Welcome again to this new post. Well, this post is, as you know, will teach you about the current policy of orthography which Indian Government tries to spread. (I) See, Devanagari is the preferred script by Government of India. But actually, its usage is a recent phenomenon. Yes, indeed it is a very new script and I am not joking. It’s a script which was introduced at the time of British rule by the propagators of Devanagari. There was Nagari Prachaarini Sabhaa (organization supporting Devanagari alphabet). Suddenly these organizations came up with and catered to an ongoing demand of Sanskritization. There were debates taking place on this topic. Sir Syed Ali Khan, an educationist and a reformist, was against the idea of Sanskritization and Devanagari, and only favored the traditional Urdu and its development and propagation. Let me tell you that there are tons of controversies which led to the divide of Urdu and Hindi. Thanks to Jawaharlal Nehru, he did not prefer ...

Invention of PIOA - Part 1

Hello Friends, So I was telling about the circumstances in which the PIOA emerged. I was small when I tried to compare different alphabets. Those days alphabets used to be my favorite thing to know about. I was too much addicted to this website called Omniglot (it's head, Simon Ager, is a nice person and I am thankful to him). I still know how to read numerous scripts. I am a proud Indian, proud because of my ancestral roots and the glorious heritage that I inherited. That's a long story. I eventually learnt reading Bengali (known by its endonym Bangla). I learnt Hindi because that's what I spoke mostly with outsiders in Mumbai. Anyways, learning Bangla and Hindi went hand in hand because they are similar in lexicon. The already too much Sanskritized language, my mother tongue Bangla helped in grasping the Hindi lessons (because the lessons taught in those classes were using a slightly Sanskritized version of Hindustani). Regularly watching news channels also helped in gain...

The First Post: The Introduction and Circumstances that lead to the invention of the PIOA

Dear Friends, How are you? I was always waiting for this day when people will hear this concept of PIOA. Well, this is something important that I wanted to tell people for a long time. The world is progressing, and so is our country and the subcontinent. Our brothers here and beyond the borders are doing great. The nations are modernizing and things are getting better day by day. People are learning new things, doing new things, adopting new things. Qualities of successful civilizations are getting revised day by day. Now the matter is that we belong to just the second generation of the arrival of modern computers in India. And many of us started using computers and mobiles just after we were born. Many of us utilized computers in many ways. I don’t want to go the details of what happened in these years, just to mention I was born at the beginning of the 21 st century. Now because of the extensive reach of the Internet in every home in our dear country India (and same in other...
